Debit Card Payment Processing

COCARD processes both types of debit transactions, PIN (online) and signature (offline).  Both deduct funds from the cardholder's checking account.

PIN Debit

With PIN debit, a cardholder selects "Debit" as the payment method and authenticates his identity by keying in his PIN (personal identification number) into an encrypted numeric PIN pad after the card is swiped through the card reader.  The transaction is transmitted through the electronic funds transfer network and the funds are deducted from the consumer's checking account within seconds.

  • Fast settlement of funds
  • Fewer charge backs
  • Increased security over signature debit transactions
  • Generally less expensive for merchants than signature debit
  • More secure and less fraud compared to signature debit

Signature Debit

With signature debit, the cardholder selects "Credit" as the payment method and provides a signature.  The transaction is transmitted through the Visa or MasterCard networks and funds are deducted from the cardholder's checking account.  Authentication of the cardholder takes place when and if the merchant asks the cardholder to present a photo ID.  Signature debit can be less expensive to cardholders that PIN debit because some banks charge users an additional fee for PIN-based purchases.

  • Ability to make debit purchases over the Internet, phone, mail and at the point of sale
  • Fast settlement of funds - the same as credit cards
